Head Hunter

30/30 Results

June 10th, 2010 by Tony Hansen.

We set out on this venture to see if we could catch 30 different species in a single 30-hour fishing marathon. Well, the event ended on Wednesday at 1 p.m. We faced about the worst type of conditions you can face for catching fish: Post spawn, cold front, rain and wind.

We didn't catch 30 different species. We caught about 32.

In all honesty, I was starting to doubt that we would reach the 30-species mark when we were sitting on 24 species with about two hours left to fish. But a frantic closing flurry fueled largely by Gabe Van Wormer's ability to hit a carp with an arrow in deep water, helped close the deal.

This was an awesome event to be part of. I want to truly thank everyone that made a pledge, signed the letter to Pres. Obama and tuned in to see if we could make this happen. We hit tens of thousands of views on the MichiganOutofDoors.com site throughout the event and there was a lot of buzz in the areas that we were fishing. It felt really good to know that folks were talking about the issues and that we were able to play a small role in educating more people about the threat of invasive species in Michigan.

Obviously after 30 straight hours of fishing, Gabe and I are a tad tired. But -- imagine this -- both of us will likely head back out on the water sometime today to relax a little and fish for fun. Crazy? Perhaps. But that's precisely what we were trying to illustrate with the 30/30 -- people don't just fish for food or to stimulate Michigan's economy. We fish because it's who we are and what we do.

Stay tuned to the site for updates on when we'll unveil our first OD video episode from the event. We'll chronicle how we were able to target the species and reveal a little bit of the background that went into it. It should be interesting.
