Tales of the Tape
‘Eye Time
February 3rd, 2010 by Gabe Van Wormer.Let's just start out by saying, I got the best job in the world. Yesterday I had a shoot up near the Tawas area with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. I got a chance to do some taping of the Ruffed Grouse Society's new ASV machine. Imagine a skid steer with a spinning drum mounted to the front. The drum is covered with carbide teeth which act like a rabid beaver on steroids. Let's just say the acre of impenetrable tag alders they were working on was leveled in short order.
Anyway, all that to say when the shoot was over, I had a drive ahead of me that took me smack over the Zilwaukee bridge. Imagining millions of walleys swimming beneath me with my name on them, I had to stop and see about the evening bite (with the foresight to have packed my ice gear that morning). I pulled the Shappell Rover out of the back of my car and hit the ice at about 3:30. Friends of mine had been fishing since the morning and had several fish on the ice. Starting out with a #7 jigging Rapala on one rod and a fireball jig and stinger on the other, it wasn't long before I started seeing fish on the Lowrance. The were pretty finicky and I worked several way off the bottom but couldn't convince them to hit. Finally got a hit by deadsticking the fireball and lost it a couple reels into the fight. I ended up with only two fish, one legal 21-incher. But all in all, not a bad way to end the evening "on the job."
