Scratch the Surface

March 29th, 2010 by Gabe Van Wormer.

Sitting at my desk this morning, I conditioned a new glass pot call from Seth at Bully's game calls. Seth put together a special cherry pot call with his new design. While I let the computer work away on burning a DVD, I grabbed my favorite striker made of bubinga wood and tried the new call out. Very nice! I just imagined a gobbler answering back. It won't be long.

Following this weekend (of walleye fishing and Michigan State basketball), I'm hitting the road very early on Monday to head to Nebraska with my bow. Hopefully I can make it out there to roost birds Monday evening. Nebraska season opens quite early, March 25th in fact. This can be a risky choice to hunt west of the Mississippi this early in the season. Weather can be horrendous and turkeys are typically flocked up in huge winter flocks. But, this can also be an advantage. If you know where they are, they typically follow the same pattern until the flock starts breaking up. I've been watching the weather to know exactly what I might expect.

Judging from the warmer weather, I think the birds will be just starting to break up. That's a good thing. I'm taking the computer along so I can bring updates along the way and hopefully, upload some video(s) of gobblers biting the dust. In the meantime, I'm shooting my new Hoyt Maxxis everyday, making sure I'm dialed in. It won't be easy because I'm hoping to do this without a blind. But, just in case, I'll be taking one along for if the going gets rough.

So, stay tuned. We'll keep you posted on all the latest hunts and it won't be long before we are putting up successful turkey hunts. The Spring Chase has arrived!
